Stop Lying to Yourself, you idiot!

29 11 2011

Today I’m looking into why I’m not living up to my own personal expectations.  Below are a list of reasons why I’m not able to start moving in the right direction.  You may have some of the same feelings.  Have a look.

  1. I’m too busy with my current job to focus on anything else.
  2. I don’t have any money to get ahead.
  3. The people I hang out with aren’t inspiring.
  4. I didn’t take the right college courses to get started.
  5. I don’t have anyone who wants to help me.
  6. All of the really great ideas are already taken.
  7. I’m too young (too old) to make a big of a change.
  8. My family responsibilities are get in the way of me charging ahead.
  9. etc etc etc. blah blah blah. born, bored, taxed, dead.

******STOP LYING TO YOURSELF YOU IDIOT!*****

I’ve had each and every one of these thoughts run through my mind at some time or another.  They are easy outs, I can live with myself by making excuses like this.  It’s like a shot of morphine that numbs the pain.  Stated differently, these excuses are what keep me from leaving my comfort zone.

I think we’re closing in on the real issue. Many of us live in the purgatory somewhere between the fear of losing it all, and the glory of chasing a dream.  Yeah, that sounds like the comfort zone to me.  So todays lesson, learn to work beyond your comfort zone, which I’ll now be calling “personal hell,” and actively seek those things or people that force you to push through your personal hell and explore new territory.

Here’s what I’m going to do tomorrow.

I’m going to head to work and talk to someone that I can’t seem to get along with.  I’m going to find some common ground with that person and then do something nice for them that they would never expect.

I realize its a small step, but I think its an exercise worth trying and I think you should too.  Good luck.
